Chloe
MacMillan meets (and falls in love with!) Winston the therapy dog
Reading to a dog, a creature that is
never judgmental, introduces a fun element to reading books. Dogs don’t
giggle
if a child stumbles over a word and they have all the time in the world
if a
child cannot piece a word together quickly. The public library in
Harvard, Massachusets, brings in dogs for children to read to.
You can read more on this program in the article
in the Harvard Post, from where this picture was taken.
Jen MacMillan (see
Levy/Hershovitz family tree) is
a librarian at the Harvard Public Library. She
took her daughter Chloe to meet the "therapy dog" Winston when he
visited the library. Just look at the wonderful expression on Chloe's
face.
Chloe's grandmother is Cindy Berman, my long-time collaborator in
keeping the Hershovitz/Levy family tree updated. Thanks, Cindy, for the
reference to this article.

Eileen and Doreen
While we were in Johannesburg the matriarch of the family, 91 year-old
Aunt Rose
Nickel, fell and broke her pelvic bone. (
See
picture of Aunt Rose's 90th birthday.)
Her daughter Marsha Krengel is recovering from a back injury and
Aunt Rose's second daughter, Eileen Glogauer, flew in from
Canada to be with her mother. Although they met in the hospital in sad
circumstances Eileen and Doreen, cousins and also
friends, were happy to see each other again after so many years.
Pumpkin and
the cat
Being used to our dogs Lopsy and Flopsy and their constant feuding with
the neighbood cats, it was a change to meet Pumpkin, Charles and
Sheenagh's dog. During the day they lie in the sun
together, and at
night they lie snuggling together in a corner on the steps to keep
warm. (Please excuse blurred picture)
Lopsy:
30/9/1995 - 26/7/2010
A short time before we left, the family dog, Lopsy, died. He'd had a
good and long life, 15 years, first in the Ramat Gan SPCA, then with
Doreen and I, then with the Rons. Our grandchildren, especially Dani
and Lior, had lived all their lives with Lopsy.
A few years ago Doreen added a page to this site about Lopsy.
Lopsy has featured quite prominently on my site over the years - a few

Pickling peppers from my garden
Five days at home between trips was enough time to pick some hot
peppers from my garden and and spend a couple of hours pickling them.
There was a bumper crop and we'll have enough hot peppers for a long
time.

Travelling by tram in Zagreb
Outside the Zagreb Train Station
Yesterday we spent most of the day
walking around Zagreb, the attractive capital of Croatia. On the
way to our
hotel we stopped for coffee at a sidewalk garden cafe outside the train
station. Contemplating the 40 minute or so walk back to the hotel I
persuaded Doreen to take the number 13 tram instead. While she
drank her coffee I studied the map and worked out that we were about
5-10 minutes by direct tram to our hotel. We boarded the tram and got a
bit worried when we didn't recognise anything after 20 minutes. Closer
examination of the map showed I had chosen the wrong direction. So we
got off and took another #13 tram back to our starting point - the
train station. Now we rode in the other direction, but for some reason,
after about 6 stops, the train didn't go where I thought it should and
after much confusion and "clarifications" by the driver who knew no
English, we got off. Following the map we walked about 40 minutes
to our hotel. Just as we were about to reach the hotel we were passed
by a
#13 tram - we are still trying to work out where it came from.
I suppose we should have been happy - Doreen got her walk and I got my
tram ride.

Holiday with the Reijzers in Aups
"When Hans and Lottie Reizjer, our very good friends from
Holland, invited us to join them in their rented
villa in
Aups
France
we gladly accepted. Six years ago we stayed with them in
Lorgues. They
enjoy a
much more relaxed holiday than we, but a chance to do nothing seemed
most
inviting after a very busy year.

Doreen's birthday
Doreen is virtually addicted to a "nice cup of English tea" in the
morning - especially if the "English" tea is Irish - Irish Breakfast
Tea supplied by Fortnum and Mason of London. It's been some time since
we were in London, and our stock bought on our last trip has long run
out. So for her birthday yesterday I mail-ordered some tins of
tea from
London. From her reaction it seems it was the perfect present.
Another thing that Doreen likes is an evening picnic on the beach. When
we and the kids were younger we did it often, but nowadays it's rare.
At Doreen's suggestion we organized a barbecue this evening on the
nearby Bet Yanai beach, with Vered, Aviv, Danielle and Lior Ron, and
Rebecca Engleberg. It was terrific!

April
2010 - Eitan's 70th birthday.
After the "candle lighting" in Eilat (see
This week's Picture) on Tuesday - my real birthday date - Doreen,
Aviv, Limor, Itamar and I enjoyed the usual delicious steaks at El
Gaucho Restaurant. Then on Wednesday evening, Aviv took over as he and
Limor organized a barbecue. We were joined by Limor's mother Margalit,
her sisters Kinneret and Ofira (with Jonatan and Michael); and by
Doreen's cousin Warren Nickel with Itai.

On Thursday we also let others do the cooking.
Vered and Aviv Ron,
Danielle and Lior, and Moran (visiting from California) joined Doreen
and I for a lovely meal at an Herzliya restaurant.

March
2010 - Passover: Rafael Dvir-Braverman enjoys his first bite of matza

March 2010:
Passover: Celebrating the
pesach seder
in Hofit with the family.
The theme of this year's
seder was
"tradition". We read from a fascimile of a
haggada printed in Lithuania 150
years ago that could have been the
haggada
our grandparents used. We said the traditional
kiddush over kosher wine that has
been produced in Pitigliano in Tuscany Italy for 500 years. And when we
said the blessing over the
matza we
showed a picture of our visit to the 16th century
matza bakery of Pitigliano.
7 year old Itamar continued the tradition by reading flawlessly from a
modern
haggada.
But the seder isn't only about tradition,
haggadah and eating - and there
was plenty of that. It's an opportunity to get together again and renew
ties with family, for the little cousins to be bigger cousins to the
littler cousins, - and in Rona Nickel's case, to hear about more
family-to-be.
And then, after the main meal and the afikoman bargaining and the
deserts, comes the dancing (=mainly jumping) and the singing of the
traditional songs, especially our favourite "Who knows One?". (See
This week's Picture for another
picture.)
